FAQ
Tinctures are concentrated liquid extracts of herbs. They are very potent, and tend to be taken by the dropperful. They can be applied sublingually (under the tongue) or added to your beverage of choice. While most tinctures are made with alcohol, tinctures can also be made with vegetable glycerin or apple cider vinegar.
We choose to use alcohol as the menstruum (solvent) in our tincture blends, because it can extract a wide range of medicinal compounds from herbs, often more so than other bases. It can dissolve both water-soluble and fat-soluble components, making it highly effective for creating potent tinctures.
We like to use rum as an ode to our ancestors and communities of color. Rum was created in Barbados from enslaved folks on sugarcane plantations. Part of “healing the root” involves connecting with our ancestors, along with transforming the knowledge and wisdom they share. We believe our rum-based tinctures are a way to honor the history, impact, and resilience of our community.
Both the Calm Down tincture and the Eye of the Tiger tincture are safe to use during pregnancy. The amount of alcohol in each tincture serving is very small and won’t get you drunk. In fact, the amount of alcohol in an herbal tincture is comparable to the amount of alcohol found in vanilla extract. Even a ripe banana has more alcohol in it than an herbal tincture serving does! Always consult with your healthcare provider before introducing herbal remedies to your system.
Yes, but with caution. Children’s bodies are much smaller than adults, so less is needed to have an impact. It is not recommended that these tinctures be used with children under the age of 10. Always consult with your child's pediatrician before introducing herbal remedies. See below for recommended dosages for children:
9-16 years, half a dropperful (approximately 0.25-0.5ml)
16+, half to a full dropperful (approximately 0.5-1ml)
